Noddy's adventures

East Kimberley, Western Australia

Noddy and his entourage waved goodbye to the NT where he saw and did lots of amazing things. He entered Western Australia, crossed into a new time zone to immediately gain an hour and a half! Suddenly all those beautiful sunsets changed from happening at around 6:30pm to 5pm. It took a bit of getting used to!

We are a wee bit behind with our posts, so there will possibly be a few more over the next week or so.

The area we were in is the Kimberley, the north of Western Australia.

This post is about the eastern side of the Kimberley, in and around Kununurra, Wyndham and Lake Argyle.

Our first stop in WA was Lake Argyle. This is the second largest man-made lake in Aus at 1000 km2 of water that captures rain from the Ord river in the wet season. It helps to prevent downstream flooding during the wet, and provides a water source to surrounding areas all year round and especially during the dry season. The Lake Argyle resort has an infinity pool that features in the travel brochures – and it is beautiful. What they don’t tell you is that it’s FREEZING COLD!!! It has become the pool by which other swims are measured – ie., “It’s not as cold as the Lake Argyle pool.” – Nothing has been as cold as Lake Argyle pool.

The lake is so much bigger than I ever imagined, going for a boat ride on it only barely scratched the surface.

Next stop was Kununurra, with a national park that is almost in the middle of town. We also went on a 4WD trip to Secret Springs – which was so secret we almost couldn’t find it. Our friend Nev has a beautiful Land Cruiser that he loves to keep clean and this was his first time through river crossings on corrugated road. He was a bit apprehensive but I think he liked it in the end.

Next up was Wyndham – on the north coast where 5 rivers link at various points to run into the ocean. The land here is vast and open, there are a few things to see in town – such as the crocodile bakery which sells all manner of pies that contain our native animals. The croc pie being the most popular.

One of my favourite places was Parry’s creek wildlife sanctuary. I had taken lots of photos here, but as you will find later on there is a reason the video doesn’t have many photos of this….

Then on to the Gibb River Road (well only the sealed part of it!) to El Questro Station. Check out the video of us crossing the last river to get in there via the You Tube link at the bottom of this post. This place has many amazing walks to gorges and hot springs, however stupid me (Cheryl) went for a swim with my phone still in my pocket at El Questro Gorge and that was the end of my recent photos…and my phone. Everything in the video has been borrowed from others!

Emma Gorge was my favourite, I spent ages floating around, taking in the majesty and watching the water drip from the top of the the overhanging gorge. Just great for the soul.

And of course it all finishes with sunset at a stop on the way to our next destination!

Emma Gorge is, well, gorgeous. How does the water temp there (f…ing cold) compare to your benchmark pool?

Not as cold as Lake Argyle pool!
Also no crocs unlike Wangi Falls in Litchfield National Park today…
